Hi,

ich möchte meine USB-HDDs mittels S.M.A.R.T. überprüfen, und bei Auffälligkeiten eine Warnung bekommen. Dafür wollte ich https://www.smartmontools.org/ verwenden.

Hier werden USB-Geräte/Adapter aufgelistet, die funktionieren sollten:

Ich habe folgende ID:

Die ID ist auf der Liste enthalten:

Jedoch entspricht die Beschreibung nicht meinem Model, ich gehe aber davon aus, das die tatsächliche Festplatte keine Rolle spielt, wenn dem nicht so ist, korrigiert mich bitte.

Wenn ich jetzt Versuche die S.M.A.R.T.-Werte auszulesen bekomme ich Fehlermeldungen:

Unter Windows funktioniert das auslesen der S.M.A.R.T.-Werte ohne Probleme. Für den Test wurde genau der gleiche PC mit gleichem Kabel und USB-Anschluss verwendet. Mit einer sehr alten Version(3.16.2) von gnome-disk-utility klappt das Auslesen auch.

Mache ich noch irgendwas falsch?

Was kann ich noch probieren um die S.M.A.R.T.-Werte auslesen zu können?

Z.Zt. ist bei SEAGATE mit etlichen Fake-Laufwerken ein grösseres Problem vorhanden.

Schwierig zu erkennen… es gibt solche Kontroller, die vorgeben SMART durchzuschleusen, dies aber bei intensiven Abfragen dann verweigern. Die einfachste Lösung ist, das Medium auf eine Docking-Station stecken. Das haben aber nur sehr wenige Leute… logisch.

Ein UNSUPPORTED FIELD ist sehr diffus… es könnte sich um eine "gewünschte" Sperre handeln… Du müsstest wirklich einmal die Datenblätter von dem Medium vom Hersteller beziehen und evtl. dort anfragen, was diese Meldung genau bedeutet.

Die Datenbank kann abgerufen werden. Eine erneute abfrage meldet zurück, dass diese aktuell sei.

Die Laufwerke sind schon einige Jahre(>5) alt und sind von der aktuellen Seagate-Thematik nicht betroffen.

Da der Kontroller in der valid-Liste ist, gehe ich davon aus, dass es auch funktioniert und ich irgendetwas übersehen habe und noch konfigurieren muss. Windows wird denke ich mit ähnlicher Geschwindigkeit die Smart-Werte auslesen und da funktioniert es. Auch ohne USB-Adapter funktioniert es. Es liegt also an der Kombination smartmontools, der USB-Kontroller, mir und evtl. noch etwas von dem ich noch nichts weiß.

Evtl. ist im Linux im Programm LAUFWERKE bei dessen Bereich: SMART-WERTE UND TESTS etwas zu finden.

Falls nicht, dann organisiere Dir das Programm SEATOOLS5 von SEAGATE und teste damit.

Wie gesagt - so etwas aus der "Ferne" ist schwierig.

Wie ich bereits schrieb, habe ich mit einer alten Version von Laufwerke(gnome-Disks) die Smart-Werte auf einem alten Rechner auslesen können.
Mit der aktuellen Version auf meinem aktuellen Rechner klappt es aber nicht. Mit der neusten smartmontools Version funktioniert es auf dem alten Rechner auch nicht.
Ich möchte die Daten mit den etablierten Tools unter Ubuntu/Linux auslesen, um so einfach mit den Daten weiter arbeiten zu können.
Ich kann mir nicht vorstellen, dass das mit den Seagatetools 5 funktioniert, ohne es ausprobiert zu haben. Hinzu kommt, dass ich eigentlich FOSS verwenden möchte.

Hallo homeserver_wacken, Du könntest noch prüfen, was von der früheren funktionierenden SMARTMONTOOLS zur aktuellen geändert hat. Evtl. gibt es dort einen Hinweis. SO kommt man nicht weiter, da es unmöglich ist es zu prüfen.

Ist die eingebaute HDD wirklich diejenige die im früheren angezeigt wurde?

Smartmontools hat bei mir noch nie funktioniert, das war nur Disks. Smartmontools ist aber momentan das unter Linux meist verwendete Programm. Zumindest ist das mein Eindruck. Ja es handelt sich um die exakt gleiche Hardware, habe ich am selben Tag getestet. Die Systeme sind momentan noch beide im Einsatz.

Ich habe noch weitere non-Seagate SATA-USB-Adapter ausprobiert. Die funktionieren alle, sind aber nur für 2.5" HDDs und ich benötige die für 3.5".

Ich habe 2 Seagate-Adapter hier und beide funktionieren nicht.

Es liegt also vermutlich an den Seagate-Adaptern. Im Netz finde ich zig Einträge zu dem Thema, aber ich bekomme es trotzdem nicht zum Laufen. Ich suche hier also Schritte die ich ausprobieren kann, oder überprüfen kann um den Fehler einzugrenzen.

Permanent Flag Settings
The usb-storage.quirks option is part of the more general mechanism for setting kernel/module options, and the exact mechanisms available for setting it will vary depending on your distribution. In brief:

if your system has the "usb-storage" driver compiled as a loadable kernel module, you can set it by creating a file (e.g. disable_uas.conf) under /etc/modprobe.d/ containing the line (with the proper id numbers substituted)
options usb-storage quirks=0bc2:231a:u
to disable UAS for that device (or

options usb-storage quirks=0bc2:231a:
to try overriding the default NO_ATA_1X flag).

You will then probably need to follow your distribution's instructions for rebuilding your initramdisk in order to make the change apply when usb-storage drives are detected upon initial bootup.

If the "usb-storage" driver is built in to the kernel, or if you simply prefer to make this change at the boot level rather than under /etc/modproble.d/, you can pass the option to the kernel as part of your boot configuration. For example, if your system uses grub2, you can edit /boot/grub/default so that in includes a line similar to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="usb_storage.quirks=0bc2:231a:u"
and then run update-grub, and then reboot.

(Note that while the basic information used in these two approaches in the same, the punctuation used is different.)

In either case, you can then try plugging your USB device in again, and confirm using one of the methods above that the change had taken effect. (Note that if you use the :u flag, the kern.log messages generated when the device is detected should now include

Umgesetzt habe ich das jetzt wie folgt:

Jetzt hat es bei mir bereits funktioniert, solange ich den PC nicht Neustarte. Sollen die Änderungen auch nach einem Neustart bestehen bleiben kann noch folgendes gemacht werden:

Nach dem Neustart hat es jetzt automatisch funktioniert. Ich hatte Probleme das, der Doppelpunkt nach dem Booten nicht mehr vorhanden war und es deswegen nicht erkannt wurde. Daraufhin habe ich die GRUB settings erneuert und es hat funktioniert. Das heißt evtl. ist der obere Teil gar nicht nötig. Wenn ich Zeit und Lust habe verifiziere ich das noch und poste das Ergebnis ebenfalls hier.

Ich werde den Test auch noch mit dem anderen

Der Zweck ist mir völlig unklar…!?

Einen neuen Adapter/Gehäuse kaufen ist keine Option, ich habe von denen noch einige hier rumliegen, da ich die externen HDDs in meinem NAS verwendet hatte. Außerdem ist das überhaupt nicht nachhaltig und Nachhaltigkeit ist mir wichtig. Zusätzlich motiviert einen doch das Erfolgserlebnis wenn man es dann doch geschafft hat ungemein. Der Plan ist mit 2 großen 3.5" Festplatten wieder ein NAS aufzubauen. Und das einfachste ist nun mal USB, wenn man den Homeserver kostengünstig selber baut.
