Eventuell wäre für das X220 auch was flotteres als XFCE sinnvoll. Plasma oder LxQt böte sich bei Ubuntu an.
Es arbeitet für meine eher bescheidenen Zweck eigentlich schnell genug, wenn es denn arbeitet.
